INVESTIGATIVE PLAN1 Investigative Plan Introduction This paper describes an investigative plan designed to deal with the spate of daytime robberies occurring recently in this city. The plan will draw upon the limited information obtained by our police officers in respect of each of the robberies. Aspects covered in the investigative plan will include the investigative steps needed, the technological assistance/support required, the analysis of any pattern to the robberies, the method(s) to be used to synthesize the available data, the types of investigative units to be used, and the procurement of needed supplies and equipment (which might require additional funding). Investigative Steps Required According to Hall (2011), investigative steps following a series of robberies in the cityà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s jurisdictions should be as follows: Step 1: Carefully review all the police reports from the various precincts / jurisdictions where the robberies were initially reported and the incidents handled. Step 2: Considering all those robberies as a group of possibly related incidents, collate the list of witnesses from all the individual police reports and re-interview each witness. This might reveal common elements in the series of crimes. Step 3: Referring to the police reports, review each item of available forensic evidence. Step 4: Carefully review the recorded CCTV footage from all surveillance cameras located within range of the scenes of the robberies, looking for possible images of the perpetrators or vehicles used. Step 5: Review existing analyses made by the police teams involved in the original incidents, looking for any identified common elements or similarities. Step 6: Synthesize the collated robberies data, facilitating a more effective review by organizing the data in terms of factors such as the Modus Operandi (MO), the day and the time, and the location of each robbery. Step 7: Identify and mark the locations of the offenses on a city map, looking for grou ping of the locations (which may help locate the base from where the offender(s) operate). Step 8: Request the potential availability of additional manpower / resources from any agencies to be involved in the investigation. Step 9: Contact other city agencies, especially in outlying areas, to determine if they have seen any corresponding increase in the numbers of robberies. Step 10: Study demographic factors such as zoning changes, major demographic shifts, opening of new businesses, etc. in order to take into account other factors that might have affected this increased crime rate. Technological Assistance Needed Since the early days of crime investigation when crime reports were handwritten and had to be meticulously and manually analyzed, technology has made the work of the investigators easier, particularly in the use of computers and sophisticated computer programs designed with criminal investigation in mind. These can include databases which allow law enforcem ent agencies to rapidly compare data such as fingerprints, arrest records, etc. Geographical Information Software (GIS) is another type of software which facilitates the creation by crime analysts of sometimes complex maps to help investigate the geographical aspects of crimes (à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“GIS Software Requirements for Crime Analysisà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚  2012). Our investigative plan should take full advantage of such available technological resources. Analysis of Robbery Patterns A consortium of five of the leading police organizations in the US developed an analysis system called à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“SARAà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚  which is a four-stage procedure recommended for use in cases such as this. The procedure stages are as follows: Scanning: By observation of reports and any patterns within them, commonalities between recurring problems or situations are more readily identified. Analysis: To obtain a more comprehensive understanding of any causal factors, the analysts consider three factual elements à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â‚¬Å" the victim, the location, and the offender(s). Those three comprise the sides of the so-called à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“crime triangle.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚  They are not only important in the process of analyzing the crimes, but can highlight needed action for future crime prevention. For example, if the crimes were committed in badly lit areas, the appropriate authority could be contacted to make necessary improvements. Response: Following identification of causal factors, it is possible to address responses to at least two sides of that crime triangle. These are the strategic plans implemented. Assessment: The analysts evaluate the effectiveness of the problem-solving activity and collect data to determine if the outcome is positive. If it is not (i.e. if the response was ineffective), then the analysts develop a new response (à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Team Community Oriented Policingà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚  n.d.). Data Synthesis The data gathered needs to be synthes ized to make the analysis easier and sharper. Essentially, that means removing data that is not pertinent to a series of crimes (in this instance, robberies), in order to focus on the relevant details. Synthesizing the data concentrates the interest of the investigators on common elements, so that (for example) witnesses may be re-interviewed to ask important questions, forensic evidence might be re-examined to look for substances not previously recognized as significant, cameras footage might be reviewed once more, and so on. All these aspects reviewed and re-examined help the investigators get closer to the perpetrators of the crimes by uncovering information that might originally have been overlooked or not reported. Investigative Units Required Effective execution of the strategic plan requires use of a range of investigative units. First there are crime analysis units (if necessary from each precinct or jurisdiction involved). Then there are the investigative units (detec tives), regular patrol officers and the forensic teams (again from each local police authority). If the scale of the operations merits more resources, it may be necessary (for example) to bring in or recruit more patrol officers or other specialist personnel. Equipment and Supplies Procurement Again dependent on the perceived scale of the operation, it may be necessary to acquire additional computer workstations and à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â‚¬Å" if not already available à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â‚¬Å" the necessary GIS software to facilitate computerized mapping of the crime locations. Other requirements might include specialized database software, and analysis software such as Microsoft Access, which is used by numerous police authorities. For some of this software, additional training resources are likely to be needed, too. Furthermore, as mentioned earlier, additional patrol officers (and therefore their vehicles, too), might be a requirement. Additional Funding It is more than probable that in order to mount such an operation as described, the cityà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s police authority may need a special budget, over and above the regular budget already agreed and made available. In order to obtain that extra funding, the police authority will be required to make a case for it, submitting the request to the appropriate agency. There are specific funding programs available. Perhaps the most applicable in this instance is the COPS (Community Oriented Policing Services office). It offers grants for law enforcement agencies, which may be used for various purposes. Those include hiring additional community police officers, purchasing new equipment and technology, hiring civilian administrative personnel, and for the promotion of innovative crime solutions. The Department of Justice also has a number of other agencies through which grants can be made available for specific purposes (à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Grantsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚  n.d.). According to the National Institute of Justice (NIJ), under the terms of their mandate they are not permitted à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“to provide direct funding for equipment purchases and training beyond that supplied under the Forensic Laboratory Enhancement program.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚  However the NIJ suggests sources for obtaining funding for equipment and other needs through various programs, including the following examples. Justice Assistance Grant Program: Funds obtained from this source à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“may be used to provide personnel, equipment, training, technical assistance, and information systems.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚  Office of Justice Programs Technology Initiatives: The dedicated website provides details of access to à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“initiatives and technological developments.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚  Information on à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Federal and private funding sources, examples of innovative funding ideas, and tips on researching funding legislationà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚  is also provided (à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Funding for Equipmentà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚  n.d.). Because funding is likely to be difficult to obtain in these days of fiscal belt-tightening by public / government agencies, securing any required additional funds may need support from local politicians including Senators and Congressmen, who might have some influence with agencies having the authority to disburse grants, etc. Conclusions It seems highly probable that to implement the strategic investigative plan set out in this document, addition technological and human resources would be necessary to put the plan as described in motion, and then to bring it to a successful conclusion. The plan as described seems to offer a practical approach to the problem, offering a good chance of success. Assuming the cityà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s police authority budget could not accommodate the costs of those resources that would mean applying for grants to provide the funds needed. As discussed above, there are sources of such funding, although in these times of a depressed economy, extern al influences might be needed to support the funding application(s). What Is the Logan Act

The Logan Act is an early federal law that prohibits private citizens from conducting foreign policy on behalf of the United States. No one has ever been convicted under the Logan Act. Although the law has never been used, it is often discussed in political contexts, and it has remained on the books since it was passed in 1799. Origins of the Logan Act A trade embargo imposed by France in the late 1790s created serious diplomatic tensions which prompted the French to imprison some American sailors. In the summer of 1798 a Philadelphia physician, Dr. George Logan, sailed to France as a private citizen and sought to improve relations between the two countries. Logans mission was successful. France released American citizens and lifted its embargo. When he returned to America, Logan was hailed by the Republicans as a hero but was severely criticized by the Federalists. The Adams administration decided to take action to prevent private citizens from conducting American foreign policy and a new law to address the situation was introduced in Congress. It passed through Congress and was signed into law by President Adams in January 1799. The text of the law is as follows: Any citizen of the United States, wherever he may be, who, without authority of the United States, directly or indirectly commences or carries on any correspondence or intercourse with any foreign government or any officer or agent thereof, with intent to influence the measures or conduct of any foreign government or of any officer or agent thereof, in relation to any disputes or controversies with the United States, or to defeat the measures of the United States, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than three years, or both. This section shall not abridge the right of a citizen to apply, himself or his agent, to any foreign government or the agents thereof for redress of any injury which he may have sustained from such government or any of its agents or subjects. Applications of the Logan Act Legal scholars believe the law may be unconstitutional, as it is so broadly written. But because it is never used, there has not been a court case in which it has been challenged. Following the criticism of his trip to France, and the peculiar distinction of having a law named for him, Dr. George Logan was elected as a United States Senator from Pennsylvania. He served from 1801 to 1807. After returning to private life, Logan himself seemed not to care about the law carrying his name. According to a biography of Logan written by his widow following his death in 1821, he had traveled to London in 1809, at a time of increasing tensions between the United States and Britain. Logan, acting again as a private citizen, sought to find a solution to avoid war between the two nations. He made little progress, and returned to America in 1810, two years before the outbreak of the War of 1812. There were two cases of attempted indictments under the Logan Act in the early 19th century, but the cases were dropped. No one has ever come close to being convicted of it. Modern Era Mentions of the Logan Act The Logan Act comes up when private citizens seem to be getting involved in diplomatic endeavors. In 1966, Staughton Lynd, a Quaker and college professor, traveled to North Vietnam with a small delegation on what he termed a fact-finding mission. The trip was very controversial, and there was speculation in the press that it might violate the Logan Act, but Lynd and his colleagues were never prosecuted. In the 1980s, Rev. Jesse Jackson embarked on some well-publicized trips to foreign countries, including Cuba and Syria. He obtained the release of political prisoners, and there were calls for him to be prosecuted under the Logan Act. The Jackson controversy ended in July 1984 when President Ronald Reagan said he believed no laws had been violated by Jacksons travels. In a more recent invocation of the Logan Act, critics of President Donald Trump contended his transition team violated the law by dealing with foreign powers before officially taking office. True to form, the Logan Act was mentioned, but no one was prosecuted for violating it.

Buffer is a generic term  that refers to a block of computer memory that serves as a temporary placeholder. You might encounter the term in your computer, which uses RAM as a buffer, or in video streaming where a section of the movie you are streaming downloads to your device to stay ahead of your viewing. Computer programmers use buffers as well. Data Buffers in Programming In computer programming, data can be placed  in a software buffer before it is processed. Because writing data to a buffer is much faster than a direct operation, using a buffer while programming in C and C makes a lot of sense and speeds up the calculation process. Buffers come in handy when a difference exists between the rate data is received and the rate it is processed.   Buffer vs. Cache A buffer is temporary storage of data that is on its way to other media or storage of data that can be modified non-sequentially before it is read sequentially. It attempts to reduce the difference between input speed and output speed. A cache also acts as a buffer, but it stores  data that  is expected to be read several times to reduce the need to access slower storage.   How to Create a Buffer in C++ Usually, when you open a file, a buffer is created. When you close the file, the buffer is flushed. When working in C, you can create a buffer by allocating  memory in this manner: char* buffer new char[length]; When you want to free up the memory allocated to a buffer, you do so like this: delete[ ] buffer; Note: If your system is low on memory, the benefits of buffering suffer. At this point, you have to find a balance between the size of a buffer and the available memory of your computer.

The relevance of the transdisciplinarity approach is seen in the nature of the problem. The Nurse, Romeo and Juliet free essay sample

The nurse is the Capulet’s servant, a faithful servant who tries her hardest to please Juliet and the rest the Capulet’s at the same time. The nurse is also a very important character in the play in the Capulet’s lives as she was hired for the job of breastfeeding Juliet, because she had unwanted breast milk due to the tragic loss of her little Susan; although she might just be another servant in the household, she has a far more superior responsibility. She plays an important role as Juliet’s confidant, and a crucial character that strongly influences Juliet’s thoughts and actions. The relationship between The Nurse and Juliet is even seen to be stronger than Juliet and her own mother’s relationship. We meet the nurse for the very first time in Act 1 scene 3, when lady Capulet announces to Juliet the marriage proposal of Lord Paris, and immediately we the nurse’s her loving side as she begins to talk about Juliet when she was a baby and gives a longwinded and explicit explanation on Juliet’s age, and that the death of Susan has bought her even closer to Juliet. â€Å"Even or odd, of all days in the year, Come Lammas-eve at night shall she be fourteen. Susan and she,God rest all Christian souls! Were of an age: well, Susan is with God; She was too good for me:but, as I said, On Lammas-eve at night shall she be fourteen; That shall she, marry; I remember it well. Her idea of men is that they just get women pregnant- â€Å"No less nay, bigger women brow by men. † Shakespeare’s play also shows that the nurse has a vulgar sense of humour, which brings out the naturalness of sex and childbirth, revealing her realistic attitude to love. ‘Go Girl; seek happy nights to happy days’. The Nurse also plays an extremely significant role between Romeo and Juliet’s relationship and marriage. At the Capulet ball the nurse was used to find out who Romeo was for Juliet. â€Å"Go ask his name† (Juliet) When Juliet falls for Romeo and asks the nurse to find out about him, it is notable that she is not drawn into Juliet’s confidence; this appears to be the first time Juliet has concealed any secrets from her. The same was with Romeo, he asked the nurse to find out about Juliet. She was also used by Juliet after the Caplet ball to communicate with Romeo, to send information from one of the lovers to the other, acting as a courier. She is quick to warn Romeo not to lead Juliet into a ‘fool’s paradise’’. This part of the play again expresses her and Juliet’s tender relationship. The nurse is looking out for Juliet to make sure she is not going to get hurt, because the nurse thinks Juliet is gentle and young. Despite the fact that Romeo was raised to hate Capulets and Juliet was raised to hate Montagues, they both still fall in love with one another. Act 2 Scene 5 shows a playful side of Juliet and the nurse’s relationship, as she teases Juliet for her own entertainment- when she comes back from delivering Juliet’s marriage proposal to Romeo, the nurse jokes around with Juliet saying that she is so tired and she is out of breath. â€Å"Do you not see that I am out of breath? † She then uses facial expressions to try to persuade Juliet that the news she has is bad â€Å"Though news be sad. The nurse continues to lead Juliet on even when Juliet becomes very impatient. â€Å"I am a weary, give me leave awhile. † And finally she tells Juliet she will be married today. Even though the nurse does not have much of a relationship with Romeo because he is a Montague and she works for the Capulet, she still creates a strong liking toward him. For example in Act 2 scene 5, the Nurse gives a Physical summary of Romeo, his face, his hand, his foot, and his body and then finishes by saying he is very gentle and that Juliet has made a good choice. Well, you have made a simple choice; you know not how to choose a man: Romeo! no, not he; rhough his face be better than any mans, yet his leg excels all mens; and for a hand and a foot, and a body,though they be not to be talked on, yet they are past compare: he is not the flower of courtesy,but Ill warrant him as gentle as a lamb. Go thy ways, wench; serve God. -What, have you dined at home? † In act 3 scene 2 the nurse brings Juliet the shocking news of Tybalt (Juliet’s cousin)‘s death, who was one of the few that showed the nurse respect. Tybalt, the best friend I had! † â€Å"Tybalt, honest gentleman† And so she again has turned against Romeo and curses Romeo, convinced that Juliet would share the same feeling. â€Å"Shame comes to Romeo. † But the nurse also brings Juliet the news of Romeo being exiled, because of his murdering of Tybalt. But Juliet loves Romeo so much that she forgives him because if Romeo did not kill Tybalt, Tybalt would have killed Romeo. The nurse thinks that Juliet is foolish and she should not cry for Romeo. ‘Will you speak well of him that killed your cousin? ’ In act 3 scene 5 the force of Juliet’s grief persuades the nurse to render a final act of assistance by fetching Romeo from the Friar’s cell. At first, she tries to defend Juliet, by warning Romeo and Juliet that Lady Capulet is coming, so Romeo could depart from Juliet’s bedroom. The Capulets come to Juliet’s room to inform that the marriage with Paris has been bought forward. Juliet then turns to the nurse in desperation. But the nurse forfeited and betrayed their relationship by telling Juliet to marry Paris, as he is ‘A man of wax’, even though she knew this is not what Juliet wants. I think it best if you married with the county’ As the nurse deceives Juliet, the only person Juliet can turn to now is Friar Lawrence. Unfortunately for the nurse, her last duty was to discover the supposedly dead Juliet, in act 4 scenes 5. The nurse takes Juliet’s ‘death’ very poorly, as much as Juliet’s mother and father. â€Å"She’s dead, deceas’d, she’s dead, alack the day! Lady Capulet Alack the day, she’s dead, she’s dead, she’s dead! † The nurse’s grief is intense and devastating, but the play suggests that it seems a fair price to pay for her betrayal to Juliet. Overall, the nurse possesses many qualities such as being very hearty towards Juliet, kind, protective, compassionate, she is a loyal and loving lady. But some parts of the play indicate she can also be long-winded, insensitive, arrogant, insecure and foolish at times. Her relationship with Juliet is especially strong, partially as she imagines that Juliet is a substitute for her own daughter Susan. In this process, human beings are genetically engineered inlaboratories. a bokanovskified egg will bud, will proliferate, will divide. One of the threats of this genetic breeding is that no family structures existon the reservation. Instead, humans are raised in conditioning centres. R.T. Starting from the time of decanting,each embryo is genetically cloned to fall into one of the various social classes. Within each social class, all members are cloned to be intellectually andphysically equivalent. Biological technology helps to achieve this equality bygenetically shaping the minds of society. Forexample, one of the lower classes in society, Epsilons, have quite a high amountof alcohol injected in the decanting process. Mental faculty, therefore, ispredestined from the moment of cloning. As it matures, so does the way it copes with the challenges life presents to him. If the child has the opportunity to be well educated, than he may learn from his history studies, and begin to recognize the different patterns of thought that society has gone through. Perhaps he will learn from these patterns and make an effort to use his knowledge to prevent making many of the same mistakes in his daily life that men have made before. If he studies medieval Europe, he may become skeptical of his own faith. Resulting in his search for a new religion that he can believe in, rather than continue to blindly participate as a member of the faith his parents had chosen for him. If he were to study Imperialism in Europe, than perhaps he would join an athletic team. He would form strong bonds with those within the team, but hopefully he could learn from Europe's mistaken ext reme nationalism and sees that the best thing he can do for his team is remain an individual, not conform to some unwritten code. He would see that it is best to create one's own identity within a group. Perhaps he has read Erich Fromm, and sees that he must recognize himself as a separate entity apart from the world around himself. He individuates. The development of this boy into an individual is exactly what Sigmund Freud would describe as a healthy development toward the formation a personal identity. It is the interactions that take place between a developing individual (the boy) and the society in which that individual lives in which we find the essence of human existence. Man has under gone hundreds of years of dialectic thought, shifting paradigms and intellectual synthesis. Only to have the culmination of human progress come down to Sigmund Freud's recognition of the individual, (with individual thoughts, emotions, morals and experiences) create a singularity through which all future perception must travel through. To get a sense of what type of society Freud changed forever, one must first examine the society from the last major paradigm before Freud, as to understand the society's influences and biases. In 1789 the fruits of the Enlightened Age were ripe and the conditions in France were right for an explosion of enlightened ideals that would define the western world for the next two centuries. Liberty, Equality and Fraternity began as the cries of the French Revolution, but would go on to mold western society into its present day form. It was Napoleon who took the fruits of the revolution and planted them in the minds of people across Europe as he conquered eastward. Despite his failure to conquer Russia and his eventual defeat, the Napoleonic Wars are the most successful and influential campaigns in western history. Napoleon institutionalized l,e,f via his Napoleonic Code. Imagine the concepts of the revolution as fruit, and France as the original orchard where the fruit was bred over hundr ed of years into the perfect crop. Now picture Napoleon as this great farmer who plants the seeds of this fruit across the European landscape. The stage is now set for these seeds to fructify into the paradigm of the next era of western civilization. Throughout the 1800's each one of these concepts matured and ripened in the Industrial Revolution which acted as the fertilizer and the soil as it provided the nutrients in the form of the technology, class antagonism, as well as a modern insecurity of insignificance. As the learner is getting into the squat position to field the ball, the right hand should extend with the palm facing down while the palm of the right hand is on the bottom of the glove resembling an alligators open mouth. Once the learner is in a squat position with both the glove hand and right hand covering the baseball, the learner is then instructed to close the ball in the glove while controlling the ball with the throwing hand. During this period of controlling the ball, the learner should funnel the ball to the stomach while maintaining eye contact all the way until the ball is in the learners throwing hand entirely. As the ball is in the throwing hand, the fielder should cross the left foot over the right leg, continue to follow the left leg through to assume a throwing position, and finally use the learners throwing abilities to throw at a target once he the ground ball has been fielded. B. Describe the different types of practice appropriate for an advanced performer and one who is just learning the activity. Blocked practice is a repetitive sequence which allows the individual to practice the same skill (Schmidt Wrisberg, 2008, p. 257). This type of practice is for both advanced and unskilled learners to utilize. Random practice is when an individual performs numerous skills in a random order to limit consecutive repetitions (Schmidt Wrisberg, 2008, p. 257). Practice that is randomized is useful for advanced learners. Constant practice is when an individual practices while performing only one variation of a set of skills (Schmidt Wrisberg, 2008, p. 271). A developing learner could field the same type of ground balls and throw to first while an advanced learner could field the same type of ground ball and throw to first, then field the same type of ground ball and throw to second base. Both types of constant practice are beneficial for both learners. Varied practice involves different versions of a skill to be rehearsed (Schmidt Wrisberg, 2008, p. 271). For the purposed skill being pr acticed, an example of varied practice would be having the learner field a variety of ground balls from different distances and throwing to different positions on the baseball field. Varied practice is more beneficial for advanced learners due to the degree of difficulty that would be carried out. For example, fielding a ground ball from multiple angles and switching between throwing to first and second after fielding. C. Discuss why the practice structure you select is appropriate using motor learning principles of practice schedules. Since the learner is a freshman baseball player who is trying to develop a consistent movement pattern to field a ground ball, the best practice structure to use is blocked practice. Blocked practice allows the individual to practice the characteristics of the skill using repetition. Through blocked practice, the developing individual can improve in fielding during the motor stage of learning. While progressing through the motor stage of learning, the coach can provide some precise feedback, but the individual can modify self-movement patterns to accomplish goals of fielding ground balls correctly. Since the freshman baseball player already has a general idea of how to field a ground ball hit towards the fielders direction, blocked practice would allow the learner to reach a high skill potential of fielding a ground ball towards the learner due to repetitive movement patterns. Learners advance through various stages of learning, when developing a skill. Whether a beginner or an expert. Use the stages of learning principles to answer the following questions. A. Name the different stages of learning as well as explain the characteristics of the different stages of learning. In the beginning of learning a skill, the goal of the learner is to get a general idea of what the body needs to do to produce the movement (Schmidt Wrisberg, 2008, p. 200). This is the verbal-cognitive stage. Learners going through this stage when developing a skill often do a lot of thinking while they talk to them self about how they will accomplish the task (Schmidt Wrisberg, 2008, p. 200). There is much improvement throughout the verbal-cognitive stage even though the movements tend to be unathletic and not the best quality (Schmidt Wrisberg, 2008, p. 201). During this stage of learning, it is important for the instructor to demonstrate with visual cues as the learner attempts to mimic the movements demonstrated (Schmidt Wrisberg, 2008, p. 201). After a certain time of repetitive, decent, quality movements, the learner will then progress into the motor stage where the movement is much more effective (Schmidt Wrisberg, 2008, p. 201). While the motor stage does not involve th e most skill potential, it is the stage of motor learning when the learner discovers the most effective and consistent ways to refine the movement (Schmidt Wrisberg, 2008, p. 202). Progression through the motor stage is often the longest stage a learner completes (Schmidt Wrisberg, 2008, p. 202). Once the learner has corrected the movement pattern after receiving feedback and improving the skill, the autonomous stage is when the learner needs to give limited attention to how they produce the movements to the skill and focus on how the movement can be modified to be more effective (Schmidt Wrisberg, 2008, p. 202). Self-confidence improves in the autonomous stage because errors are less likely to occur as the learner is close to the highest potential of the skill. Even though the autonomous stage is the final stage of learning, it is a never-ending phase as it takes years of practice for the learner to produce the skill flawless (Schmidt Wrisberg, 2008, p. 203). B. Use a scenario where an individual would go through the different stages and items that would take place during each of those stages. Explain the scenario fully. (sport or skill all information must be accounted for in explaining what is going on.) When learning how to throw a baseball, the learner begins by being instructed by the baseball coach. The learner is a six-year old tee-ball player who is right handed while having no prior experience with throwing a baseball. The individual is an average height and weight for a six-year old male. Throwing a baseball was taught from the very beginning stages and the process begins as the verbal-cognitive stage begins for the learner. The learners coach explains that the grip of the fingers should be placed over the laces as he shows with a visual demonstration. The youth baseball player then attempts to copy the exact same grip learned from his coach by telling himself, place the fingers over these red marks on the ball. After a decent grip of the ball has been performed, the coach then instructs the youth baseball player to face the hand (as the grip of the ball remains the same way) away from the face. The coach informs the learner to pretend the hand is a cobra snake. Using this cu e, the learner understands that the cobra snake needs to be facing away from the face so the snake doesnt bite the face. As the learner is gripping the baseball, the start of the throwing motion begins when the learner takes the ball out of the glove. The learner is then instructed to grip the ball as previously learned, face the ball towards the ground, then keep the ball facing the ground and away from the face while bringing the ball up directly behind the head with the arm in an angled position. This motion is demonstrated repeatedly to the learner so the learner can mimic the exact movement several times. The learner is constantly talking out loud about the directions to throw a baseball. The learner says, grip the laces, face the cobra away from the head during the wind up, and release the ball in front of the head towards the target. As the learner is attempting the initial phase of throwing a baseball, the learner forgets to face the cobra away from the face and starts to de velop bad habits. The coach quickly corrects the bad movement pattern providing extrinsic feedback by explaining, dont forget to face the cobra away from the face while bringing the baseball down and up. Once the ball is gripped correctly, the ball is behind the head after the wind up, and the ball is facing away from the face so the cobra doesnt bite, the learner is then instructed to throw over-head to a target. The throwing motion was demonstrated so the learner again has a visual demonstration of what the skill should look like. The ball isnt close to the target because the ball was released at an inappropriate time. The coach tells the learner to release the ball in front of the head and have the ball roll off the fingers so the ball has backspin. This is also demonstrated visually. Over a period throughout the practice day, the learner eventually gathers the general movement of throwing a baseball. Although the learner understands the general movement, the throw is not accurat e and still requires much improvement and attention. At this point of motor learning, verbal-cognitive stage is still occurring. However, once the learner has developed a general throwing movement from demonstrations, verbal cues, and thinking, the learner begins to make effective adjustments. The learner then begins the motor stage with more confidence. In this stage, the learner is adjusting the entire body. The learner understands that foot placement improves throwing accuracy, the release of the ball is more consistent, and trunk rotation control is more consistent. Since throwing a baseball is a closed skill, the learner focuses more on repeating high quality throwing motions and making the throw consistently smoother and controlled (Schmidt Wrisberg, 2008, p. 202). After the motor stage produces a more efficient throwing skill, the autonomous stage occurs where the player starts throwing to different targets (i.e. throwing to the first baseman, throwing to the second baseman, throwing to the catcher, or throwing long distances). Performing in the final stage, the learner has developed a crow-hop giving the player more power with throws. The learner also developed quicker and more specific ways to throw the ball to different targets such as developing skills during a relay throw to the catcher from the outfielder. Throughout improvements in throwing a baseball while the learner was completing the autonomous stage, the learner also developed throwing skills to throw different types of pitches such as the curveball and knuckleball. C. Explain what happens to the learner in each the stages of learning for the scenario. As previously mentioned, the learner started throwing at six-years old. In the verbal-cognitive stage, the learner utilizes demonstrations, visual cues, and verbal cues to provide self-talk and thinking when producing the movement. In the scenario discussed above, the learner thinks of directions such as, grip the laces, face the cobra away during the wind up, and release the ball in front of the head towards the target. Self-talk and thinking while attempting the skill is common during the verbal-cognitive stage. The goal of the learner while progressing through the verbal-cognitive stage is to understand the general movement. The motor stage is different than the verbal-cognitive stage when explaining what happens during each stage of the throwing movement. Recently stated, the motor stage begins when the learner already has a general pattern to move. Therefore, the learner seldom uses self-talk or thinking to produce movements in the motor stage. Instead, the improvements are made quickly and the throwing motion performance is more effective. Like what was stated recently, the learner realizes how to use the entire body to produce a better throw which eventually becomes consistent. For example, the learner learned in this stage that correcting foot placement would allow more throwing accuracy. When the learner progresses through the motor stage, the learner is developing as a human being. The individual has much more control over the body and is much older. The learner has become so aware of the environment that the learner understands the closed skill of throwing a baseball and can adjust without much feedback. In the final stage of learning, the learner shows great potential in throwing a baseball. The learner is fully developed as a human-being which means he does not have to adjust based on how his body grew. At this point, the learner is mastering a craft and knows where to place the body and arm to provide the most efficient throw. This is the autonomo us stage of learning where the individual may have to use a crow-hop throughout the throwing motion to hit the target successfully as mentioned above. Either way, the learner has the confidence to produce an effective motion that is near the maximum skill potential. You are teaching someone how to perform a motor skill, such as catching a ball, performing a squat or dribbling a ball (hand or foot). Using various motor learning principles answer the questions below. A. Identify and describe the skill with detail along with the characteristics of the learner. The learner is a ten-year-old little league baseball player who is left handed and not fully developed. The learner is unathletic, average height compared to teammates, and in healthy condition. The motor skill being taught is catching a baseball thrown directly at the body using a glove. B. Using effective instructional techniques (instructions, demonstrations, learning cues) outline the process in which each would be used to teach someone the skill that has been selected. To begin instructing the skill, a description of the skill is necessary. Step one is getting into an appropriate position to catch the ball. Before the ball is released from the hand of the individual throwing the ball to the learner, the right hand wearing the glove should be up with the same arm extended on an angle directly in front of the chest while assuming the ready position. Meanwhile, the left hand is next to the glove prepared to cover the glove after catching the ball using the palm and webbing area of the glove. The learning cue for the arm positioning to catch the baseball is to teach the ready position. Step two is keeping the eyes on the ball. As the ball approaches the glove, the learner is to maintain eye contact with the ball as it hits the spot of the glove and squeezes the thumb and fingers together to keep the ball in the glove which then turns into step three in the instructional process. The learning cue for this direction is squeeze. Meanwhile, the left hand i s covering the glove so the ball does not drop out of the glove. After the description of the skill, a demonstration of catching a ball was the final step before observing the learner attempt the skill of catching a baseball. C. Using the memory process, explain how the learning takes the information presented to them and puts it into memory. The memory process is made up of three distinct memory systems (Schmidt Wrisberg, 2008, p. 54). Memory plays an important role in movement patterns. With the appropriate amount of practice, any skill or movement pattern can be memorized (Schmidt Wrisberg, 2008, p. 54). Short-term sensory storage (STSS) is the initial phase of memory. In this phase, information is constantly being segmented in the brain and is only maintained as a stimulus for only a few hundred milliseconds (Schmidt Wrisberg, 2008, p. 54). The STSS phase processes these short bouts of information in such a simultaneous manner that learners use very little focus on the processing (Schmidt Wrisberg, 2008, p. 54). Once the information is processed in STSS, short-term memory (STM) assesses the processed information as it pertains to the skill being learned. In the STM phase, the pertinent information of the skill remains in the memory shortly while the irrelevant information does not get processed (Schmidt Wrisberg, 2008, p. 54). When practicing a skill such as catching a ball, every time the skill is experienced, information learned throughout each experience is only maintained if focus is on that information (Schmidt Wrisberg, 2008, p. 54). Since STM has a limited capacity, it is up to the learners to utilize this phase of memory as effectively and efficiently as possible while being instructed. In the third and final phase of the memory process, information is mostly stored much longer than the first two stages. Long-term memory (LTM) stores an endless amount of information from experiences for an excessive duration (Schmidt Wrisberg, 2008, p. 55). LTM has more control and effort to process information so that actions can be retrieved, modified, and performed continuously so those actions can be utilized for other skills no matter the difficulty (Schmidt Wrisberg, 2008, p. 56). D. While the learner is performing the skill, feedback is used for various things. Provide example feedback statements as well as what those statement address. Intrinsic feedback is the information that is sensed from produced movements either outside the body or within (Schmidt Wrisberg, 2008, p. 285). While learning the skill of catching a ball, examples of intrinsic feedback would be how hard the ball is, what the ball sounds like when hitting the glove, how much more does the glove need to open to catch the ball in the web space, or where does the arm need to move to catch an overthrown ball. Another form of feedback is extrinsic. Extrinsic feedback is information sensed by an outside source such as a coach, teacher, or another teammate (Schmidt Wrisberg, 2008, p. 286). Examples of extrinsic feedback would be comments from a coach such as, Great job keeping your eye on the ball, or Next time, move your entire body where the ball is going. Knowledge of performance is considered a type of extrinsic feedback (Schmidt Wrisberg, 2008, p. 289). This type of extrinsic feedback addresses the action. Something like you did not keep your eye o n the ball, is an example of knowledge of performance. Knowledge of results, on the other hand, is also extrinsic feedback but addresses the success of the skill rather than the action (Schmidt Wrisberg, 2008, p. 286).
